In 2008, I was about to get kicked out of engineering school because I couldn’t grasp thermodynamics.
I was spending all-nighters installing Linux on my brand new first laptop — an HP Pavilion with 1 GB of RAM. Even for the time, that was no powerhouse.
Ubuntu Hardy Heron and Compiz
Inspired by levelsio, I wanted to recreate my earliest Linux experiences using Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 and its famous Compiz window manager.
The rotating cube desktop, windows that wobbled like jelly, fire burning as you closed them — I couldn’t stand any of that today. But in 2008, it felt like magic.
What I Rebuilt
Out of nostalgia, I recreated a simulation of that interface: nostalgy2008.elimbi.com
It’s JavaScript, not a real emulation. But it captures what that era meant: the freedom to tinker, break things, and start over.
What were you doing in 2008?
